Poppet: a term of affection for a small child or sweetheart. Also, in Nautical terms its a temporary supporting brace for a vessel hauled in land!

But don't take that (the small child bit!) the wrong way! Its a (mainly) British term of endearment. I call everyone poppet. Its also a kind of candy here in Britain. A bit of toffee covered in chocolate!
