Dean: It's like the good old days! An honest-to-goodness monster hunt! It's about time the Winchesters got back to tackling a straightforward, black-and-white case.

Sam smiled indulgently. But there was no denying that he was glad to see his brother back to “normal”. He stumbled over that word, having lost the idea of what normal was long ago, as soon as he had slipped back into the passenger seat of the Impala on the hunt for his father.

But Dean hadn't been this happy for a long time and he was pleased to see it.

Sure, Dean always pretended to be happy, the well perfected mask of arrogance and attitude plastered on his face, but Sam knew him better than anyone, better than himself perhaps, at least right now, and he could tell that he was being haunted by memories of Hell, of their father dying, of Sam dying in his arms.

He was babbling about something else now, probably the women who were wearing next to nothing, or the vast amount of beer, but Sam couldn't take his eyes off his brother, let alone concentrate on what he was actually saying.

He had longed to see his brother this happy, since before he could even talk, even comprehend the thoughts of making Dean happy in his mind. But he had failed, always failed, Dean felt responsible, protective, glad, but he rarely felt happy. And if hunting an honest to goodness monster made him happy, who was he to deny him?
